It is now up to all of us, in Puerto Rico and in all 50 states, to insist that Congress respect and honor the U.S. citizens of Puerto Rico who voted for statehood.
Statehood benefits all Americans -- closes corporate tax breaks, and enables Puerto Rico to compete, prosper and pay its fair share on equal footing.
The people of Puerto Rico have been U.S. citizens for 100 years. And many Puerto Ricans have defended the United States and made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
Twice in the last five years, a majority of our fellow Americans in Puerto Rico have voted for statehood.
And on June 11, 2017 –the U.S. citizens of Puerto Rico voted again for statehood.
Over half a million votes were cast and 97% chose statehood over independence or maintaining the status quo.
